480 • Part IV. Prayer: The Faith Prayed

in silence He speaks to our souls. In silence we are granted the

privilege of listening to his voice.

Silence of our eyes.

Silence of our ears.

Silence of our minds.

. . . In the silence of the heart God will speak.

— Mother Teresa, cited in

The Power of Prayer

(New York: MJF Books, 1998), 3, 7-8

PRAYER

I raise my eyes toward the mountains.

From where will my help come?

My help comes from the Lord,

the maker of heaven and earth.

God will not allow your foot to slip;

your guardian does not sleep.

Truly, the guardian of Israel

never slumbers nor sleeps.

The Lord is your guardian;

the Lord is your shade

at your right hand.

By day the sun cannot harm you,

nor the moon by night.

The Lord will guard you from all evil,

will always guard your life.

The Lord will guard your coming and going

both now and forever.

—Ps 121

As the deer longs for streams of water,

so my soul longs for you, O God.

My being thirsts for God, the living God.

When can I go and see the face of God?

—Ps 42:2-3
