OIL OF THE CATECHUMENS:

Oil blessed by the bishop during

Holy Week to be used in preparing

a candidate for the Sacrament

of Baptism.

OIL OF THE SICK:

Oil blessed by

the bishop in Holy Week to be used

for the Sacrament of Anointing of

the Sick. In necessity, a priest may

also bless this oil.

OLD LAW:

The term refers to the

Ten Commandments and the way

a faithful Israelite was called to

observe them; following this Law

was the manner in which a believer

held up their part of the old cov-

enant with God.

OLD TESTAMENT:

The first part

of Sacred Scripture that contains

the Pentateuch (the first five books),

the Historical Books, Wisdom

Literature and Prophetic books.

These come to us from the people

of Ancient Israel before the com-

ing of Christ. The books of the Old

Testament were inspired by God.

ORDINARY TIME:

The desig-

nation for the period during the

Church’s Liturgical Year that

falls outside the times of Advent,

Christmas, Lent, and Easter.

ORIGINAL HOLINESS AND

JUSTICE:

The “grace of original

holiness was to share in divine

life” (CCC, no. 375). “The inner

harmony of the human person, the

harmony between man and woman,

and finally the harmony between

the first couple and all creation,

comprised the state called ‘original

justice’” (CCC, no. 376).

ORIGINAL SIN:

The personal sin

of disobedience committed by the

first human beings, resulting in the

deprivation of original holiness and

justice and the experience of suf-

fering and death. It also describes

the fallen state of all human beings,

including the experience of con-

cupiscence, ignorance of God, and

suffering and death.

A name, given to the

Holy Spirit by Jesus, which means

adviser or consoler.

PASCHAL MYSTERY:

In the

Sacraments Jesus Christ enacts his

Paschal mystery. In speaking of

the Paschal Mystery we present

Christ’s death and Resurrection as

one, inseparable event. It is
